Design Technology – making light boxes (construction)

Year 5 used their DT and Science skills to create their own, unique light boxes. After looking at various designs, functions and real-life light boxes, Year 5 got to work designing their own images.

Once designs were established, the children then began to construct them. Using bench hooks and saws, the children carefully cut the wooden dowels to the correct lengths (which they had measured previously). All children demonstrated a brilliant technique, ensuring they were safe throughout the process. Before building the frame itself, it was important to ensure that all the pieces were the exact same length. This precise task was done using sand paper.

Next, the pieces were glued together in a square frame, and corners were reinforced using card to add additional strength. Squares were then turned into cubes, ready for the outer cladding using card.

Finally, once the design was sketched, cut out and added to the front, over translucent tracing paper, it was ready to be illuminated. Year 5 used their knowledge of electricity to assemble a simple circuit to place inside the frame.

As one can see, the illuminated boxes look fantastic, especially in the dark. The children were excited to take them home and proudly placed them for their families to enjoy.
