Physical Education – a Hip-Hop dance class

Year 5 took part in a Hip-Hop masterclass with Phil Tang in the Spring term. This type of taster experience is an important way for children to experience new forms of physical activity, which they can then choose to follow in their own time, if they become inspired.

At the beginning of the session, Phil taught the children about the culture of Hip-Hop and the different elements involved, including literature (using your voice), music, art and dance. They learnt about the importance of expressing yourself and always trying your best. They understood how this might be done through Hip-Hop, or other areas of their lives either inside or outside of school.

The children were shown graffiti art, listened to beat boxing and watched Phil showcase his break-dancing moves when ‘breaking’. The lively atmosphere, music and energy filled the hall and continued as the children had a go at break dancing themselves.

It was fantastic to see the children find their groove and display some impressive moves. Perhaps some of them will choose to follow dance further as a result of this experience?
