Spring Showcase: sharing our learning of Ancient Islamic Civilisations

In the Spring term, Year 5 enjoyed being able to share their learning with parents and carers at the Ancient Islamic Civilisations Showcase. This provides an opportunity for the children to consolidate important knowledge and to practise their communication skills.

This was a unit which the children found interesting and challenging. It included a great deal of learning about the ancient, round city of Baghdad, and the Caliphate empire which ruled it at this period of time.

The showcase endeavoured to demonstrate this learning journey the children undertook, starting with the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World and their locations. This led into an interesting study and debate about whether the Hanging Gardens of Babylon really did exist or not.

The children were then keen to show their learning about the House of Wisdom too; these were a library and university, which scholars from across the world came to study at. The House of Wisdom also had links to the topic of light in Science. Here, the children learnt about scholar Ibn Al-Haytham, who discovered how the eye works and wrote his book of optics while studying in Baghdad.

The children really enjoyed making the Ancient Islamic Civilisation showcase an interactive experience for the visiting parents and cares, and they created challenges, quizzes and treasure hunts at many of the stations. A huge thank you to those who came and listened to the children’s learning; we hope you learnt something too.
