Practical learning in maths - Roman numerals
Sometimes the best way to remember key knowledge is to learn in a more practical way. In maths, the Year 4 children used lolly sticks to form Roman numerals including 1 (I), 5 (V), 10 (X), 50 (L) and 100 (C).
They were then able to use their knowledge of Roman numerals and how they are sequenced to make lots of different numbers. For example, once they knew how to make 5 (V) they could make the number before (IV) and the number after (VI). Later, they were able to apply their learning to more complicated problems, including calc-ulations such as IX + XIV = XXIII.
