Inspiring STEM assemblies – a path to becoming a doctor

In April, one of our parents, Dr Peter Lilitos, took up the opportunity to visit KS1 and talk about his journey to becoming a paediatric doctor.

Peter told the children about his early childhood, and how he worked hard on his learning in school, especially his science. This meant, that when he became interested in becoming a doctor, at the age of 15, he had the background knowledge he needed.

Peter spoke about other roles within medicine, and how other people with backgrounds in science choose to become nurses, invent medicines for patients or create the machines needed to care for them. Peter also described how his job, now specialising in children’s cardiology, had taken him to other parts of the UK and the world, giving him many different and exciting experiences. At the end, children asked a range of interesting questions about becoming a doctor, and some of them had the opportunity to listen to their heart beats with one of his stethoscopes.

This 15-minute assembly was part of a programme, where parents offer to come to Talbot and share talk about their experiences in the STEM professions (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). It is used to inspire children to consider future careers in these areas and is very popular.
