Cultural Capital and Enrichment
At Talbot, children benefit from a flexible curriculum that builds on what they understand and know already. We believe that celebrating our cultural heritage as a community is critical, as is exposing the children to situations they may not have had previous experiences of.
Gradually widening children’s experiences as they progress through school is an important step in providing rich and engaging learning across the curriculum. We plan carefully for children to have progressively richer experiences in nursery and beyond. These include trips to the local park, shops and visits to places of worship, museums, sports and music venues just to name a few. Some particular highlights include:
- Understanding how history has shaped our future, e.g. Year 2 Arthur France and the Leeds Carnival and theme days across the school.
- Ensuring our curriculum reflects our community, e.g. Islamic Civilisations, Indus Valley and local studies in History and Geography.
- Celebrating the rich diversity and faiths in the school, e.g. Faith assemblies, Languages day
- Educational visits for all, linked to our locality and beyond, e.g. bookshops, Herd Farm, Low Mill.
- Supporting our local community, e.g. visits to local residents, Santa-a-gram and choirs.
- Growing our own vegetables.
- Learning more about First Aid and how we can help others.
Educational visits and visitors are a key feature of the curriculum; the school subsidises a range of these to enrich the curriculum for all. Recently these have included:
Planetarium in school, local visits to places of worship (Church, Mandir, Synagogue, Mosque and Gurdwara), Libraries, Local Roundhay shops, Roundhay Park, Tropical World, Kirkstall Abbey Museum, Armley Toy Museum, Temple Newsam Farm, Harlow Carr, Science workshops (egg hatching), West End Theatre Company in school visit, Meanwood Valley Farm, The mobile farmer and his farmyard of animals, Circus skills, Eden Camp, Pizza Emporium History to life visitors in school (Sir William Petty and the Anglo-Saxon Man), ArtForms workshops – Macbeth, Bamboo Tamboo and Samba, Local Police and Firefighters, Road Safety, Leeds Playhouse visit, Young Voices visit to Sheffield, Balanceability, Bikeability, Residential visit to Askrigg, Herd Farm Outdoor adventure, York Museum, BMX and skateboard venues.
