David Hockney – Joiners project
This term, Year 5 embarked on a creative journey through the fascinating life and extraordinary collection of artworks by David Hockney. They didn’t just study his paintings, they immersed themselves in the bold techniques and playful styles that Hockney developed over his long and celebrated career.
After mastering recreations of his iconic Yorkshire landscapes in a variety of mediums, the class took on an exciting new challenge: creating their very own Hockney-inspired “joiners”. Using iPads, the children snapped dozens of photos of the same subject (each other!) from different angles and positions. Then, like true digital artists, they pieced together snippets of these images on the computer to reveal multiple perspectives at once. This technique allowed Year 5 to capture movement and a moment in time.
The results were spectacular — fragmented, dynamic collages that captured movement, energy, and a single moment in time. The final pieces were not only impressive but bursting with creativity. Well done, Year 5.
