Mathematics – measuring and problem solving
As part of the mathematics, Year 3 have been learning about measures.
Part of the curriculum involves learning about millimetres, centimetres and metres and being able to measure accurately. After mastering this skill, the children were required to apply these within a problem-solving setting – ‘Body Part Maths.’ The children needed to prove whether given statements were sometimes, always or never true.
Measuring is a strand of maths that continues throughout KS2, becoming increasingly complex and increasingly abstract. Therefore, the concrete experiences like this are vital in that they ensure the learning is pinned on a meaningful appreciation of the underlying skill.
