PSHE and PE – Scooter lessons

In PSHE, the Year 3 children enjoyed a road safety session delivered by Leeds City Council Road Safety Team focussing on how to be safe on scooters.

The Road Safety Team began by building on the knowledge the children had gained from last year about how to safely cross roads using the Green Cross code.  They reminded them of the need to Stop, Think, Look and Listen when crossing roads and the children were able to remember a number of safe crossing places including zebra and pelican crossings.

The class then considered some of the benefits of scooting and quickly identified exercise, fresh air and looking after the environment as some of the key ways in which scooting was beneficial.  The road safety team focussed on the importance of wearing helmets at all times when scooting and the need to never scoot on roads or when crossing roads.

After that, there was the opportunity to go outside and put some of the scooting skills into practise.  The children were taught how to ride their scooters safely, including how to use the break.  There were also some competitive aspects, such as who was able to free wheel the furthest.

This was a lovely way to start the term by building on the children’s previous road safety knowledge and is incredibly relevant to many children who regularly scoot to school or to Roundhay Park.
