Continuous provision in Year 1 – broadening and reinforcing learning
Year 1 have been extremely busy in the areas of provision. There are areas for role play, reading, creative area, writing, maths, spelling, construction, fine motor skills and a play dough.
The planning of continuous provision is inspired by our curriculum, sparking genuine interest in a range of themes and topics for the children. In these areas, children engage in self-directed play and exploration, allowing them to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding across a range of subject areas. These areas also help foster the important learning skills of independence, creativity and critical thinking.
In the spelling area, the children have enjoyed practising their spellings through a range of engaging activities. They have used British Sign Language to sign spellings, cracked a code using emojis to replace letters, made words out of plasticine and many more activities.
In the maths area, there are activities related to the weekly topic. The activities are always tangible, and there is always equipment to interact with, to extend their mathematical understanding. For example, the children loved measuring how tall the beanstalk was during our topic about Jack and the Beanstalk in English. Other activities consolidated their understanding of number.
Writing is a focus area in Year 1. Each week there is a new writing activity in the area of provision, that the children can complete independently. Activities have included a wanted poster for the giant, an animal fact file, a crocodile description and an acrostic poems. It has been amazing to see the children’s development and progress in this area.
The construction area is always popular. The children have created their own beanstalks from LEGO and paper chains, a house out of art straws (for Jack to live in) and woven Enormous Crocodiles. The children always enjoy being creative, and they love using the range of different materials and tools available for them.
The reading area has carefully selected, high-quality books, that the children can access. Both fiction and non-fiction books relating to topics can be found in this area. Role play also forms part of this area, and the children are encouraged to act out and re-tell familiar stories with the resources. This allows them to use their vivid imaginations to the fullest.
The areas of provision help ensure that children leave Year 1 with a solid foundation of skills and knowledge, that they will need to continue their learning successfully throughout school.
