English – persuading people to buy and Anglo Saxon property

As part of their English topic studying persuasive writing, Year 4 wrote a text to persuade someone to buy an Anglo Saxon property.  The connected nature of the topic allowed the children to recall and use their historical knowledge of the Anglo-Saxons in their writing.

Firstly, during Guided Reading, the children read a text that was written to persuade people that a run-down, undesirable property was better than it really was.  They used their inference skills to identify ways in which the property wasn’t quite as good as it seemed!

Then, during English, the children practised techniques such as the use of powerful adjectives to turn something less desirable into something better.  The children were given the premise that a new Estate Agent was opening on Street Lane and would be specialising in selling historical properties such as Victorian slums, Egyptian pyramids and Anglo Saxon houses.  Using their knowledge from their history topic, the children knew that Anglo Saxon houses typically only had one room, a fire in the centre and were built close to streams.  They then used this knowledge to write a persuasive text emphasising the benefits.

Finally, to give it even more purpose, they filmed their own Location, Location, Location videos showing some potential Anglo Saxon buyers around the property. This process, combining reading, writing and historical skills, makes it more likely that the learning will be memorable and purposeful.
