STEM Month, Week 4: Maths

Imagine a world without numbers! No maths lessons was the first thing that came to mind for lots of the children, but when Mr Youdan and Mrs Glosek started to unpick a world without numbers in our maths focussed assemblies, it very quickly became apparent that this wouldn’t be so good after all!  No birthdays, no way of monitoring time, no way for shops to know how many products to make or for customers to be able to pay.  In short, numbers and maths matters.

During lunchtimes, the children were invited to complete various maths challenges ranging from Play Your Cards Right! (higher or lower card game), matching number pairs games to tangram challenges, where they had to use problem solving skills to create shapes. There were also opportunities to complete physical maths challenges such as moving cones between hoops to meet given criteria. The intention was to show that maths encompasses many different skills as well as what we typically think of when maths is mentioned.  Our maths week also coincided with National Numeracy Day so we were able to access some of their resources such as using a number system where numbers had been replaced by colours.

Below are some links to some of the challenges the children completed:

Lastly, optional home learning challenges were set for children who wanted a further maths challenge and to try some problem solving skills. If you fancy your own problem-solving challenge, why not have a go yourself?
