STEM Week 3: Engineering (DT)
The third week of STEM month landed on engineering, for Talbot that’s DT (design technology). I have been privileged enough as a co-ordinator to be able to adapt our curriculum to ensure we give our pupils a broad, varied and exciting curriculum. Each year groups learn build on their previous learning and learn new skills as well as learning ways they could use DT in their future careers.
During the STEM week, the children had the opportunity to explore four different concepts, they were; marble runs, structures, building bridges and airplanes. It was a joy watching the pupils work individually and collectively, sharing their ideas, supporting each other and of course have a little competition.
Children in Reception were invited to design and make their own marble run using play-doh, their designs were so unique and helped build their creativity. Years 1 and 2 were invited to explore structures by building their own structure using just cups and lolly sticks. Some children went for the tallest whilst others created complex, stable, multi-layered structures. Years 3 and 4 were invited to create a bridge strong enough to support 500g, using five or less sheets of paper. The logic, perseverance and resilience the children put into the task was truly inspiring. Year 5 and 6, were introduced to a new design of airplane, different to the conventional, learning that there is always another way to make something work.
