Establishing lunchtime routines – supporting independence

The Reception children are settling into lunchtime routines confidently in the hall. They choose their own lunch in the morning, which makes them more independent and gives them agency. At lunchtime, they remember to wash or gel their hands, line up and collect their own tray and cutlery themselves. Many children are still learning to use a knife and fork to cut things up themselves, although the adults are there to help with tricky items like Yorkshire puddings.

For those children, who prefer packed lunches, children are encouraged to open things for themselves and try the different foods they are sent in with.

The children sit with their friends, providing an opportunity to chat and be social with one another too.
