Expanding knowledge of the local area - mini walking trips

Both Reception classes have taken part in small group trips to the local area, to learn about their community. The children decided to do something kind for the people who help us in school; they asked the office staff what they would like from Cooplands Bakery, as a treat. They collected their orders and enjoyed the walk up to Street Lane. On the way, children spotted house numbers, old and new paving stones and learnt what a cobbled road was.

At the bakery, the children took turns to ask for the items and paid. The remembered to say ‘thank you for helping us’ and, when they returned the treats to school, the office staff thanked the children. Children reflected on how nice it felt to help others, without getting something themselves.

Other children had a busy trip to the local charity shops. They learnt about recycling and sustainability and how shopping at a charity shop helps others. They made a ‘wish list’ of items they might want to get for their own bedrooms, and they enjoyed mapping out the route to and from the shops. More unusual items they discovered were a huge bag of wool, cars and a dinosaur.
