Outdoor learning – as important as classroom lessons

Reception children have a lovely garden area to play out in; this provision is known as ‘playful learning’.

The children explored the water tray resources, using pipes and containers to work with friends. Many children also tried to be brave and have a go at some ‘risky’ play; they learnt how to balance along the bench and swing on the tree at the end to strengthen their arms. Sometimes, they might need a hand or a supportive arm; however, the ambition is that they will grow increasingly confident and be able to do these things independently over time.

Reception have a messy outdoor kitchen, which is great for creative play. Children are often seen making potions, ‘hot chocolate’ and yukky soups. Often children can come home a little dirty; this should be seen positively. It means that they have been learning their maths, science and social skills outside.
