Personal, social and emotional development – learning how to ‘be’ at nursery

The nursery environment provides a great setting for children to develop their social and emotional skills. Learning how to make friends, deal with conflict and develop empathy are crucial life skills that will set children in good stead for their future learning.

In nursery, children are supported to achieve the aim of them leaving Talbot as kind, confident and resilient citizens from their very first day with us. Giving children their own coat peg and assigning them a key worker creates a sense of belonging and are important starting points.

As children settle in to their sessions, the nursery team dedicate time to playing with the children, supporting their interactions, modelling how to deal with disagreements and teaching them the rules and expectations of Talbot nursery. We spend time together as a whole group and in smaller, key worker groups, learning about feelings through our ‘Hygge circle times’ as well as through stories and discussion of events within nursery.

It is important that children also witness the nursery team using expected and appropriate behaviour with each other too, so staff make a conscious effort to model this to the children as they interact with each other as colleagues.
